Project Overview

The BlueScope Steel Main Control Building represents a significant milestone in PSB Air’s growth, marking our successful entry into the industrial central plant sector and demonstrating our capability to deliver highly engineered mechanical services within one of Australia’s largest and most demanding manufacturing facilities.

Located within the Port Kembla Steelworks, the project involved the complete Design & Construct mechanical package for the facility’s new Main Control Building – the operational hub supporting the No. 6 Blast Furnace. The building houses critical control rooms, switch rooms and operational spaces that require continuous, highly reliable environmental control to support the safe operation of one of Australia’s largest steel manufacturing facilities.

Engineering Beyond the Specification

PSB Air worked closely with the client and project team throughout the design process, identifying opportunities to improve the long-term reliability and durability of the mechanical systems.

One of the most significant engineering improvements was our recommendation to replace the originally proposed cooling towers with stainless steel construction cooling towers. Given the aggressive coastal and industrial atmosphere of the Port Kembla Steelworks, standard construction materials would have been susceptible to accelerated corrosion, reducing service life and increasing maintenance requirements.

By proactively identifying this risk and recommending a more suitable solution, PSB Air delivered an engineered outcome that significantly enhanced the longevity, reliability and maintainability of the central plant.

The Main Control Building required precise and reliable environmental conditioning for critical operational areas, including control rooms, switch rooms and technical spaces that support the continuous operation of the steelworks.

PSB Air delivered a robust condenser water central plant incorporating closed-circuit cooling towers, water-cooled CRAC units, water-cooled VRF systems and specialised air purification systems, providing stable environmental conditions while ensuring maximum system reliability and redundancy within this mission-critical facility.
